Show Love. Shop Small: Give Back this Small Business Saturday at Mesa Mall
- November 25, 2020
Mesa Mall is working with a local artist to add color, texture and vibrancy to outdoor spaces for the community to enjoy as part of The Canvas Project. Mesa Mall has selected local artist Jamie Copley for this installation showcasing Colorado Mesa University. As a long-time Grand Junction resident and CMU alum herself, Jamie was passionate about this project and has worked on several pieces around the community, including her most recent piece – a mural collaboration with several local artists illustrating Western Colorado wildflowers and plants.
Through the Canvas Project, local artists have a space to showcase their art within prominent areas of Washington Prime Group town centers across the country. While celebrating and supporting local artists is at the heart of The Canvas Project, it also provides an opportunity for the community to connect and grow together through art, emotion and imagination. It also provides Mesa Mall with unique opportunity to collaborate with community partners, such as Colorado Mesa University.
“Local artists make our community vibrant,” said Paul Petersen, General Manager at Mesa Mall. “Their use of subjects, color, texture and composition awaken a sense of curiosity and connection to the world around us. The Canvas Project supports our local arts culture, while providing an opportunity for our community to grow together. We will spotlight an artist’s talent with live, in-person and in-progress work on display right outside.”
Mesa Mall wanted this artwork to be highly visible to the community and guests. Because of that, the mural is planned to go on the south wall of Mesa Mall, directly to the east of the Men’s Warehouse entrance. Mesa Mall has worked closely with Jamie to create a plan for artwork that will inspire the community. The concept is in collaboration with, and in support of Colorado Mesa University. Using the University’s bold ‘Mavroon’ and gold colors, this mural will not only show ‘school spirit’, but will also highlight a community partnership. Students, residents, and visitors alike will have the opportunity to use the mural as a ‘background’ and take a photo in front of it as they wish.
The community will see a few different phases of The Canvas Project. Initially, vibrant blocks of color are being placed in spaces where the mural will be going currently. Then, throughout the next few weeks, Jamie will be installing a mural in the given space.
